چکیده

Objectives-The cancer incidence among 2957 boiler welders was investigated. The subjects were registered electrical welders from 1942 to 1981. A subcohort of 606 stainless steel welders was studied separately. Methods-The investigation was a historical prospective cohort study based on a national registry. The loss of follow up was 4 9%. Results-There were 625 deaths (659 expected). There were 269 cancer cases (264 expected). An excess of lung cancer was found; 50 cases v 37'5 expected. There were three cases ofpleural mesotheliomas v 1-1 expected. The subcohort of stainless steel welders had six cases oflung cancer v 5*8 expected, and one case of pleural mesothelioma v 0'2 expected. Conclusions-The welders in the study were assumed to represent a qualified work force. These welders had a small excess risk oflung cancer. The excess risk did not seem to be associated with stainless steel welding. Smoking and asbestos exposure were potential confounders. (Occup Environ Med 1996;53:231-234)

Study of cancer incidence among 6363 male workers in four Norwegian ferromanganese and silicomanganese producing plants.

OBJECTIVES Little has been known about the risk of cancer associated with occupational exposure to manganese. The objective of this study was therefore to examine the associations between duration of specific work and cancer incidence among employees in four Norwegian ferromanganese and silicomanganese producing plants. METHODS Among men first employed in 1933-91 and with at least 6 months in...

Study of cancer incidence among 8530 male workers in eight Norwegian plants producing ferrosilicon and silicon metal.

OBJECTIVES To examine the association between cancer incidence, in particular incidence of lung cancer, and duration of work among employees in eight Norwegian plants producing ferrosilicon and silicon metal. METHODS Among men first employed during 1933-91 and with at least 6 months in these plants, the incident cases of cancer during 1953-91 were obtained from The Cancer Registry of Norway. ...

Occupational exposure to welding fume among welders: alterations of manganese, iron, zinc, copper, and lead in body fluids and the oxidative stress status.

Welders in this study were selected from a vehicle manufacturer; control subjects were from a nearby food factory. Airborne manganese levels in the breathing zones of welders and controls were 1.45 +/- SD1.08 mg/m and 0.11 +/- 0.07 microg/m, respectively. Serum levels of manganese and iron in welders were 4.3-fold and 1.9-fold, respectively, higher than those of controls. Blood lead concentrati...
